Year 3 to Year 6

At Alpha Omega, year 3 to year 6 classes focus on building upon foundational skills to further develop student knowledge in a number of content areas. Year 3 to 5 classes incorporate 1 hour of English and 1 hour of Mathematics. Year 6 classes have separate classes for English and Mathematics consisting of 2 hours each. Students are allocated to classes according to the level of foundational skills and knowledge that they encompass.

Students that need to refine their foundational skills are offered foundation building classes in both literacy and numeracy. These classes focus on basic literacy concepts such as spelling, reading and comprehension, grammar and basic writing texts. The numeracy component places an emphasis on building whole number, place value, addition, subtraction, and multiplication and division skills.

For students with a sound foundation, main stream classes provide students with the opportunity to develop their knowledge further. In literacy, students learn to comprehend, interpret and analyse various text types. They gain exposure to grammatical and structural features of texts, and learn to construct these texts in the correct manner. In numeracy, students further develop their skills in whole numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. They also learn about fractions, decimals, measurement, space and geometry. To challenge students, these classes also provide word problems and problem solving questions that help students apply their knowledge.
