Standard – Advanced English
“Books are humanity in print” – Barbara W. Tuchman
English is without a doubt one of the most important subjects students will ever study due to its inclusion as a compulsory component of the HSC. It is the one subject that all other subjects are standardized against. The key outcome of the English course is to gift students with the ability to express, communicate, create and feel.
Our teachers focus on helping students in:
- Responding effectively to previously unseen texts
- Creative writing
- Extended responses
- Clarity of expression
- Understanding why texts are composed
The best essays, the best speeches, and the best stories are written by students who enjoy the subject matter. At Alpha Omega, teachers aim to motivate and inspire students to take a different view, to challenge the normal, and strive to new heights. English is about understanding the human mind and spirit, and how it shapes and colours our world.
The structure and content taught in English classes at Alpha Omega are as follows:
Year 11 English
o There are no set texts or units of work due to the range of texts studied across schools
o There is a focus on the skills students need to perform at school
o Individual time is allocated to each of the students to assist them in school-based tasks and assessments
Year 12 English
o The core Area of Study is taught to students in the first term collectively
o Students are taught the skills they need to perform in the HSC as a group
o Individual time is allocated in the lesson to assist students in completing school assessments and tasks
