Year 7 to 10 English
In adherence with the Board of Studies English syllabus and our own high educational standards, Years 7 – 10 English at Alpha Omega expands English education from elementary areas of literacy, such as reading, comprehending, and writing, to more advanced, interpretative, analytical, imaginative and expressive elements.
The English department at Alpha Omega perceives English as more about the rich variety of the text, and the exciting exploration of language and context. Our High School English Programmes are divided into two distinct areas of study:
- Written English
This involves the understanding of text structure, word choice, punctuation and imagery.
- Spoken English
This involves the manipulation of pitch, volume and tone to evoke emotion or create imagery, and the mastering of oration through rhythm, length of sentences, word choice and non-verbal aids (e.g. hand gestures).
Both areas directly or indirectly involve critical thinking, drawing upon representations, deriving meaning, sharing and justifying ideas, and communicating – all of which are elements of everyday societal life. Our High School English tutoring is designed to assist students who have difficulty or advance those who are otherwise competent. Our courses start with an assessment of student competencies, allowing for special and often individual attention for students across their areas of needs or concerns.
Year 7 to 10 Mathematics
At Alpha Omega, our years 7 to 10 courses have been designed to provide the vital skills, resources and attitude that a student needs to succeed in High School Mathematics. Classes are designed to build and solidify students’ mathematical foundations, as well as extend their skills and efficiency, hence increasing students’ appreciation for the subject.
Years 7 – 10 Mathematics classes are structured in a manner that allows students to have all mathematical problems they are facing at school resolved, and also have their mathematics knowledge enhanced through our own scope and sequence. Classes are structured in a manner that enhances the recollection of the mathematical skills and models taught. Below is a brief overview of how a mathematics class is structured:
- Students mathematics problems – both school and AOE homework – are resolved
- Overview of the previous lesson
- Teaching and application of new content
- Revision/summary of lesson content taught
- Allocation of homework
Although class content does not necessarily correlate with topics covered by students at school at every time, all Mathematics topics are covered in classes over the year. In fact, often AOE mathematics classes are ahead of those at school, boosting students’ self esteem and confidence.
